Mumbai Local Train First-Class Coach Murder Over Door Dispute Amid Heavy Monsoon Rains; Accused Flees
A 22-year-old commuter was fatally stabbed inside a Mumbai first-class local train coach after a heated dispute over closing the door during heavy monsoon rains. The accused fled before the train halted at Borivali. GRP has launched a murder investigation amid widespread disruption caused by intense rainfall across Mumbai.
According to the Borivali GRP, the incident occurred amid intense monsoon showers when an argument broke out between two passengers over closing the train door during heavy rain. The dispute escalated rapidly, leading to the accused allegedly stabbing Mayank Ramesh Lohar in the abdomen with a sharp weapon. The victim sustained critical injuries and died on the spot.
The accused and the deceased had boarded the train from Andheri and were travelling in the same first-class coach on the Churchgate–Virar suburban line. Around 10 PM, during heavy rainfall, the victim reportedly requested the accused to close the train door. The request led to a verbal altercation that quickly turned violent, culminating in the fatal attack.
After committing the crime, the accused allegedly deboarded the train at Borivali station, Platform Number 6, before the train had fully stopped, and escaped from the location. The Borivali GRP has registered a murder case and launched an intensive investigation to identify and arrest the accused, who remains absconding.
Police officials stated that CCTV footage and other crucial evidence have been recovered and handed over to investigative authorities. Western Railway has extended full cooperation to the investigating agencies. Officials also confirmed that further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses, and assured that the accused will be arrested soon.
Mayank Ramesh Lohar, a 22-year-old resident of Virar, was employed as a sales executive at Westside in Andheri. He routinely commuted between Andheri and Virar for work. On the night of the incident, he had boarded the train from Andheri in a first-class coach while travelling from Churchgate towards Virar.
The violence unfolded amid severe monsoon conditions across Mumbai. Overnight rainfall led to widespread disruption of suburban train services, severe waterlogging in low-lying areas, and significant hardship for commuters. Authorities reported that several parts of the city recorded over 200 millimeters of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 AM. The average rainfall recorded in the city was 195 millimeters, while the western suburbs recorded 208 millimeters and the eastern suburbs 167 millimeters.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across Mumbai and its suburbs over the next 24 hours. The southwest monsoon arrived in Mumbai 13 days later than usual, yet brought intense rainfall upon its onset, offering relief from heat but causing widespread disruption.
The situation in Mumbai worsened due to overnight rains, with several low-lying areas submerged, traffic movement affected, and daily commuting severely impacted for thousands of residents.
This incident also echoes a recent similar case reported in Delhi, where a passenger was killed in a train-related dispute over seating, highlighting growing concerns over escalating violence in public transport systems.
Authorities continue to investigate the Mumbai case with urgency as public fear intensifies over safety in suburban rail travel during peak monsoon conditions.
